XVe Waffendrill

On the subject of whorehouses, 1543:

Melichior Ambach, editor of biblical, patristic & contemporary writings against whoring & adultery:

If we can have a "house of women" for single and married men to frequent without sin, let us also provide a "house of boys" (Bubenhaus) for our womenfolk, especially for those who are old and poor and have no husband to service them. Would whoring be any worse for the poor, needy female sex?"…

Continue

A German Dance!

The reconstruction of Die Zwelf Monet as a dance debuted on July 3rd at the Known World Dance Symposium in Toronto. I was expecting maybe 10 people to show up for the class and had 25. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. So there's finally a German dance to do at events!

Here's how it goes:

Part A:

4 measures (16 counts) - four alman doubles forward

Part B:

2 measures (8 counts) - 2 alman doubles

2… Continue

New shirt

I am now about to do my first handsowed smocked shirt project. The last one I made by machine, an interesting accomplicement too ;)

Got fine linen in Skopje (Macedonia) yesterday so now it is good time to start.
Have a nice dark green thread that I sincerely think would be nice in the smock but are not sure if there are any findings where the thread has been in other colour than the fabric. If anyone know please contact me :)

Off to dance and share my research!

I fly out tomorrow morning for the Known World Dance Symposium in Ealdormere (near Toronto). This is my first trip to Canada too. It's going to be a busy few days, and I know I will come back with feet so sore I can barely walk...but in a good way.

I will be presenting my research on using period woodcuts to reconstruct peasant dances. For this first run, I'm using Die Zwelf Monet by Sebald Beham dated 1546 and the Peasant Holiday done by Barthel Beham sometime prior to 1535. After the… Continue

Don Brown

For all of you who work the California Northern and Southern faires, sadly, I must pass on the news that Don Brown, the Mullah, who owned and ran the Mullah's Teahouse, is losing his fight with cancer. He will be moved in the next few days from the hospital to hospice. We all know what that means. If you have ever enjoyed the strongest Turkish Coffee on earth, at the faire, then you probably know Don Brown, or DB. He is one of the institutions, cornerstones, of faire. I have watched the most… Continue

"Der Weiss Kunig"

I have posted some Photos of my copy of Der Weiss Kunig. This book can be found. It is somewhat rare, but I found my copy by using abebooks.com , I am sure that other sites, like bookfinder.com will produce the same results. This is a 1985 reprint of the 1775 edition. I was fortunate to find a copy in almost unused condition. There is also a book about Urs Graf, the Landsknecht cum artist. Again this was found on abebooks. The stuff is out there.

Red and Black Wappenrock Construction Diary

At the end of April 2008, I was contacted by Baron Erich of Zweihammer Armory about making him a wappenrock for his Laureling ceremony. He was the Baron of the SCA group I played with while out in California for several years, and I was thrilled to be asked. As my schedule had opened up, I was able to take on the commission.

As he is progressing towards a more period appearance, he wanted something documentable, that he could wear without… Continue

Thinking about all the stuff I want to do. My new red/brown knechtdress is ready soon. I just have to put some fur to the neckline of the gollar in brown that goes with it...The socks are nearly done- just slahes left to make...

Just found som nice white fur lying around- that goes nicely with the off-white wool I bought last week. I think I have to make another gollar out of it.

Changed my mind about the orange coat I made last year...I think I will leave it as it is for… Continue
